🍗 More than “Shisa Nyama“ 🔥

Shisa-who you ask? Well, then you’re clearly not from Jozi, the Mother City or from anywhere in between there 🤭

Let me fill you in: South Africans love meat and bad are always keen on a good barbeque and this expression, which is Zulu, literally means “burnt meat”. Meat isn’t really served burnt (although it’s not entirely impossible 🤭) but it is usually really well grilled. A lot of local restaurants and Take-Aways that sell grilled meat are called Shisa Nyama places.

I had the best time creating these images on an assignment earlier this year at an outdoor Shisa Nyama on the outskirts of the mining town of Rustenburg.

The images were created with #MyFujifilm #XT5 + #XF1655mmF28 and #xf56mmf12rwr in #ClassicChrome and #Godox #AD600 then edited in #AdobeLightroom

🌞 Acing Landscapes in Reala 🌳

My family and I love hiking. In winter we don‘t always get started at the crack of dawn, because our winters can get cold! This may come as a surprise, since this is Africa, but we can get some really cold days, cold as in like single digit cold (it even goes below zero at night)! Correct!

And yes, officially we are in spring now but thanks to global warming we regressed into winter last weekend. So we decided on a midday hike when the sun was at its highest. Great for comfort, bad for photos. So I thought.

But then I dialled in a #RealaAce variant into my #X100VI and everything was peachy after that! Nice colour, good detail in the shadows and highlights - pretty photos all around ❤️

I think Spring has become my most favourite season. Longer days, warmer weather, the smell of jasmine and yesterday-today-and-tomorrow in the air - all of it contributes to inject new energy into body and soul. It is such a special time.

So today we celebrate Spring Day with a walk through the dusty, burnt fields of @DanielsRustGameFarm. However dreary it may seem, Spring colours are starting to sneak in here and there.

☀️ Happy Weekend ☀️

I love experimenting with sunbursts and how sun flares affect subjects. In this shot, the rim light created by putting the subject between the camera and the sun makes it pop and reveals the hairy stem and leaves thanks to the dark background behind the plant.
